The government of the People's Republic of China has generously donated one million dollars to support the education of Palestinian refugee children in Gaza. Today, the government of the People's Republic of China provided a one million dollar donation to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), in support of the agency's educational program to ensure that school-age Palestinian refugee children receive quality, equitable, and comprehensive basic education.
UNRWA will utilize this generous donation from the Chinese government to ensure that approximately 5,300 students, both boys and girls, receive basic education in five UNRWA schools in Gaza. Over the decades, UNRWA has been a leader in emergency education, demonstrating flexibility and innovation in the face of conflict, occupation, blockade, displacement, and most recently, a global pandemic.
UNRWA's educational program has made significant progress in ensuring that all students, regardless of gender, abilities, socio-economic status, health, or psychosocial needs, have an equal opportunity to learn and receive support to reach their full potential.
In expressing their support for UNRWA, His Excellency Ambassador Zhang Jixin, Head of the Office of the People's Republic of China to the State of Palestine, stated, "For more than 70 years, UNRWA has played an indispensable role in alleviating the humanitarian plight of Palestinian refugees by providing essential relief and protection services to them.
China highly appreciates and commends UNRWA's work and has been committed to assisting UNRWA within its capacity to fulfill its mandate. This year, China has donated one million dollars to UNRWA, a concrete step in implementing President Xi Jinping's three-point proposal for the settlement of the Palestinian issue. China stands ready to work with the international community and make positive contributions to an early, comprehensive, and just solution to the Palestinian issue and the achievement of lasting peace, global security, and shared prosperity in the Middle East."
In expressing gratitude for this vital contribution, Mr. Karim Amir, Director of Partnerships in the Department of External Relations, Communications and Information of UNRWA, said, "The People's Republic of China is a highly valued and growing partner for UNRWA.
Thanks to the continuous support of donors like the Chinese government, UNRWA can provide vital services to Palestinian refugees throughout the Middle East in the face of ongoing challenges."
Since its first donation to UNRWA in 1964, the People's Republic of China has consistently provided financial and political support to UNRWA. In recognition of this important partnership, UNRWA is committed to enhancing its cooperation with China in providing assistance to millions of Palestinian refugees in the region.
